When My Passions Merge
I’m a hiker. That is my other passion in life. I have a love for Mother Nature and an overdeveloped sense of adventure. When I talk to people about this they commonly say something like “wow, I bet you love to take your camera with you and get some really good pics!” Well, the answer to that is… “kinda”. I’m a photographer and have some cool camera stuff but I also have a 40lb pack with 3-4 days’ worth of food and camping gear. So, do I want to add another 15+ lbs of expensive equipment to that? Heck no! Sure, when I go on vacation I’ve got to leave enough room in the minivan for all of my camera equipment. But, that doesn’t mean that I am willing to lug all of my gear through Disney World to get a few pictures of my kids in the teacups at Magic Kingdom. In fact, I feel sorry for anyone who is lugging around a DSLR in those situations. Every time you try to ride a ride or eat lunch with princesses you have to make sure that you don’t set down that expensive camera and forget it. All that while you’re trying to not lose any kids. Besides, who doesn’t have a camera on their phone anymore?
When my old Marine Corps buddy Blake and I got together last month to hike a 60 mile chunk of the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina, I couldn’t wait to try out my new Samsung Galaxy S7. I was not disappointed. I had recently upgraded from an older Iphone so it was like learning a new language. But the camera in that thing is just amazing. With a 32 gig drive and an additional 128 gig mini SD card I couldn’t take enough pics with the 12 megapixel camera. I am always running into situations where I wish that I was strapped with my DSLR to make a photo exactly the way I think that it should be, but that isn’t always practical. I love the fact that our technology has gotten to the point that we can now make amazing images with that little device that we carry with us every day. Besides, I don’t think that I would have been able to make it to the top of some of those mountains to take photos with another 15lbs of gear! (LOL)
Anyway, I wanted to share some of these pics with you to show off what this amazing little camera/phone can do. My intent is not to bore you with a presentation of my vacation photos. I just really appreciate the quality to convenience ratio (if you will) of this smart phone technology that we are blessed with. When you are out there doing what makes you happy with your friends and family, don’t forget to snap off some pictures and share them with people. Otherwise, what else do you have besides some cool memories?
